A unique learning experience for specialized physiotherapists

Thanks to the collaboration between the School of Cranio-Mandibular Rehabilitation and INSTITUTO PORTUGUÊS DA FACE, on April 12–13, 2025, we are offering an exclusive opportunity for just 20 physiotherapists to expand their knowledge of the sectional anatomy of the cranium and temporomandibular joint (TMJ), with two exceptional instructors: Prof. David Faustino Angelo and Prof. Fabrizio Spallaccia.

These two expert maxillofacial surgeons will present the various surgical protocols and perform the dissection at the prestigious Hospital de Santa Maria in Lisbon.

 To combine theoretical teaching with practical therapeutic applications, the course will include sessions led by physiotherapists Filipa de Sousa, Shanna Soares and Marcella Sarkis, providing a comprehensive and detailed understanding of rehabilitation protocols and the use of dry needling.

Saturday, 12 April

 9:00 - 11:00 | Introduction to Surgical Approaches to the TMJ

  • Introduction to the main surgical approaches for treating TMJ disorders.
  • Discussion of the techniques used by Dr. David Angelo and Dr. Fabrizio Spallaccia, including minimally invasive techniques.
  • Indications and contraindications for the most common TMJ surgical procedures.
  • Analysis of various surgical procedures: arthroscopy, arthroplasty and discectomy


14:00 - 16:00 | Post-Surgical Rehabilitation Approaches for the TMJ

  • Marcella Sarkis: Focus on the physiotherapy approach at Instituto Portogues da Face
  • Shanna Soares & Filipa De Sousa: A targeted dry needling approach for pain control and functional recovery.

  • Practical guide to TMJ dissection under the supervision of Dr. David Angelo and Dr. Fabrizio Spallaccia.
  • Detailed analysis of the anatomical structures and critical points for surgical access.
  • Discussion of anatomical variations and their impact on surgical approaches.


 13:30 - 16:30 | Practical Sessions

  • Practical session on manual therapy techniques using anatomical specimens.
  • Performing dry needling techniques on anatomical specimens
  • Practical assessment by faculty, with personalised feedback for each participant.
